HANDLING INJURED ANIMALS ON THE ROAD
· Stopping to assess – safety first. Pull over in a safe spot where you will not obstruct oncoming traffic and turn on your hazard lights.
· Determine if the animal is alive or dangerous. …
· Contact the right authority. …
· Provide an accurate location. …
· Keep the animal comfortable. …
· If possible, stay until help arrives. …
· Weigh up the risks: only lift a wild animal if you’re sure that you can do so without risk to yourself or others.
At the scene of any road traffic accident involving an animal, you’re advised to:
· Stay safe: set up a hazard area, and move yourself and the animal (if possible) out of the path of oncoming vehicles.
Only approach the animal if it’s safe to do so. Be aware that an injured animal – particularly a wild one – may feel very frightened and defensive.
INJURED BOAR
Call Police 999 in an emergency so officers can come out and make sure the road is safe for other drivers. In turn police call out the Forestry Commission on 03000 674800 (Monday to Friday 9.00am – 3.00pm). who send a marksmen in case a badly injured animal has to be put down for compassionate reasons.
DEAD BOAR
If you find a dead boar on the road or verge contact the Police or telephone Forest of Dean District Council, Customer Services Team on 01594 810000 (Monday to Thursday 9.00am – 4.45pm & Friday 9.00am – 4.30pm). Or you can contact the Forestry Commission on 03000 674800 (Monday to Friday 9.00am – 3.00pm). If the deceased boar is on private land contact the land owner or the Defra Helpline on 03459 33 55 77 (UK only) (Monday to Friday 8.30am – 5.00pm).

Ring the Police on 999 or 101 or contact Ray Puttock on 07590434492. If it’s safe to do so cover the deers face with a blanket ect to reduce stress .
